New sheriff in town: Brighton announces Keith Setler as head coach

It has been one month since Morgan Cruce took a coaching position at the University of North Alabama and resigned as head coach for Brighton High. On Friday, the Cardinal family welcomed his successor, Keith Setler, who will take over the football program this fall.

Cougar fans may remember his name from the late 2000s as he was the defensive coordinator that helped led Munford to a winning season for the first time since 1998, which included a huge win over Henry County. During that time, he developed a love for Tipton County, and when he saw the head coaching position opening, he did not hesitate to apply.

“We loved our time up here,” Setler said on, “we know about the people, we know about the support, we know what it means to people to have rivalries up and down highway 51. It means something to people and I want to be a part of that.”

The love that the community brings to the program not only attracted Setler to come, but the “foundation of winning” that the area offers is what drew him to apply.

Athletic director Chris Burgess felt that Setler is the “right candidate for the job” with his impressive resume and background.

As a Memphis native, Setler graduated from Kirby High School then walked on to play for the University of Memphis before earning a full scholarship his 2nd year, and made the all-conference team in his time as a player.

After college, his coaching career started at his alma-mater, being the linemen coach in ’97, which soon turned into a head coaching job.

Eight years later, he went across the city to coach at East High School and went to Munford afterwards, and, in due time, he was given a chance to coach at the college level, becoming the offensive coordinator for Central Methodist University in Missouri. After being there four seasons, he decided to coach high school again traveled down to Texas to coach before coming back to Memphis and landing the head coaching job at Cordova.

The legacy he wants to leave at Brighton is simple, yet effective: to be consistent year in and year out.
