Brighton head coach Stan Gatlin has been around long enough to admit when a season did not go well, and last year’s did not as Brighton managed just four wins.
“It was horrible,” Gatlin said about his team that did not make it out of the district tournament for the first time in several years.
With that said, Gatlin and his players feel like the 2022-23 season should be better.
Senior combo guard Jalen Terry, who led the team last year with 10 points per game to go along with five rebounds, is back and looking to have a big senior year. At 6-2 he’s versatile enough to do damage inside and outside.
His plan this year is to focus more on getting his teammates involved.
“There’s a lot more chemistry this year,” Terry said. “Just a lot of guys being here during the summer. We didn’t have that last year. I feel like we’re coming together quicker. I think we’re going to be a lot better this year.”
Also back is senior point guard Nick Moore. He missed the second half of last season with an injury but is ready to go this season. He averaged seven points a game last season.
“It felt like last season would never end,” Moore said. “I think we have a lot better senior leadership this season.”
Sophomore center Tyler Alston and junior guard Monterio Clark are two more guys with experience. Several younger players will be competing for time as well.
“We had a lot of training this summer,” Gatlin said. “We’re young, but they seem to be coachable and they work hard in practice. We’re going to have bumps in the road, but at the same time I expect them to grow.”
