Three local high school students won first place in the Great American Seafood Cook-Off contest held in New Orleans on Sunday.
The Tuna Wonton Nachos prepared by Alayla McCoy and Tiffany Malone from Covington High School and Auburny Currie from Brighton High School earned a $1,000 prize for their dish.
4-H Youth Development Extension County Director Brigette Passman said the annual event brings together top youth from around the nation to compete in this national 4-H contest.
“Youth are tasked with preparing dishes featuring seafood using influences from their home state. Tipton County used Memphis BBQ as their influence by featuring a dry rub on their tuna steaks. Youth also learned food safety and ways to avoid cross contamination while preparing their dish. At the contest youth had to give a five-minute presentation about their dish and the health benefits of eating seafood.”
