Brinley Cousar had a stellar two-year softball career at Dyersburg State Community College and the coaching staff at Freed-Hardeman University noticed.
Last week Cousar, a 2020 Covington High School graduate, signed a scholarship with Freed-Hardeman to finish up her college softball career at the four-year school that advanced to the NAIA World Series last season.
Cousar is a speedy, left-handed-hitting, top-of-the-order shortstop. She was fourth in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association last season with 45 stolen bases in 46 attempts. Cousar was second on the team in hits with 67 with a .379 batting average and .455 on-base-percentage. She struck out just nine times in 177 at-bats. Cousar reached base in 49 of 53 games.
Freed softball head coach Todd Humphry said, “The more she is on, the more chances we have to score.”
Cousar is following her cousin, Sarah Elizabeth (Cousar) Poston, to Freed-Hardeman. Poston played there from 2010 to 2014. She was an All-American pitcher and was later named to the FHU Hall of Fame. Poston was also Cousar’s assistant coach at Covington.
“I’m very excited for her and the team.” Poston said. “”I’m hoping that she enjoys Freed as much as I did. It’s a special place and I’m just excited to be able to come back to campus and watch her play now.”
“The Cousar name is a strong softball family,” said Humphry. “Brinley will just add to the strength of our program.”
