The weather is heating up and the events calendar is starting to fill. Here are 10 things to do in Tipton County this month, from fishing and food trucks to events honoring the fallen officers and veterans.
Fish for prizes at Glenn Springs
The 27th Annual Children’s Fishing Derby at Glenn Springs Lake in Drummonds happens this Saturday, May 7, from 9-11 a.m. The free event is open to children ages 4-12 (must be accompanied by an adult). Bait is also provided. Register online today.
Attend a food truck festival
Like food trucks? Both Atoka and Covington are having food truck festivals this month! The Town of Atoka started these events during the height of the pandemic and it’s been a proven success. Liberty Vintage Marketplace in Covington’s Depot District has also held a couple food truck festivals but this weekend is the very first one hosted by the city.
Atoka’s event, which will be held at Nancy Lane Park, will take place this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature 13 food trucks, including MemPops and locally-based Grillin’ & Chillin’ and Paradise Grill, and 31 other vendors.
The Covington food truck festival, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, will have seven food trucks, including Rockin’ Robin’s and Delta Soul Eats. It will be held in Cobb Parr Park.
Participate in the community baby shower
The second annual community baby shower event hosted by Canaan M.B. Church and the Bare Needs Diaper Bank will be held at the Boys and Girls Club on Saturday, May 7. The free event distributes baby supplies – like diapers, wipes, pacifiers, bottles, blankets, clothes, toys, bath items, and more – to new and expectant parents from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is required. Shop for Mom
Liberty Vintage Marketplace is having its annual Mother’s Day pop-up shop this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to all the store has to offer – from home goods to Wor Jewelry and In House Coffee – you can shop with vendors Bad Boy Bakery, Maximum Blooms and the Rockin’ Robin Food Truck.
Remember fallen officers
The annual memorial for fallen officers will take place on Friday, May 13 at noon at First Baptist Church in Covington. The public is invited to attend.
Get fresh produce and other favorites at the farmer’s market
The Court Square Farmer’s Market opens for its 2022 season on Saturday, May 21! They will have local vendors with early season produce, plants, fresh cut flowers, baked goods, canned foods and other handmade items.
Go fishing with first responders
The third annual Cops & Bobbers fishing event will be held in Atoka’s Pioneer Park on Saturday, May 21 from 7-10 a.m. The event, which pairs children with members of law enforcement, is open to those 15 and under. Bring your own bait and pole and plan for a fun day that will also include prizes.
Honor veterans at the museum
On Saturday, May 21, the Tipton County Veterans Museum and Nature Center will host a Memorial Day celebration in combination with Armed Forces Day. They will also have a bench dedication remembering Beany, Larry and George Whitley, three brothers who all served our country. The guest speaker Guy Critelli, U.S. Navy (Ret.). Refreshments will be served. The event begins at 10 a.m.
Listen to live music in Covington
The Covington Downtown Music Series begins its series of weekly concerts on Saturday, May 21. Crossroads will play on the courthouse lawn from 4-7 p.m. and Wildhearts will play at the Liberty Vintage Stage from 7-10 p.m. Concerts will continue through July 16.
Vow to help stop the violence
The 8th annual Bull Day, which honors Orlandus “Bull” Cobbins who was shot and killed in 2012, is set for Sunday, May 29 in Covington’s Frazier Park from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The event’s goal is save lives by encouraging others to stop the violence and increase the peace. The event will feature food, family, games, music, cars, bikes, ball, local merch and fun in a safe environment.
