In an effort to continue to raise funds for the Covington-based Boys & Girls Club of the Hatchie River Region, this weekend a rodeo will be held at the Saddle Club Arena in Cobb Parr Memorial Park.
Last year, the event was the single biggest fundraiser for the organization, bringing in approximately $15,000, said Boys & Girls Club Chief Professional Officer Dr. Tracy Johnson.
"The funds will ensure we can go ahead and open in August and do whatever we can to begin getting the staff in place," she said.
Though the process has taken several years and the opening of the club has been delayed several times, Johnson reassures the club will be open in time to focus on the needs of local children once school starts. Applications for the club are currently being accepted.
"Our mission is to help the kids who need us the most so we can give them hope and help them prosper, to know the opportunity exists for them to be productive citizens and give back."
The facility will be located in the old Frazier High School gymnasium, located at the corner of Long Avenue and North College Street, and will be open to all children in Tipton County. It has recently undergone extensive renovations to prepare its use in servicing a need in the community. Johnson said opening a new club is a big deal for the organization as very few opportunities to do so have arisen since the recession.
"The [Boys & Girls Club of America] didn't want to start new clubs that would struggle when existing clubs were already struggling," she said. "For us, though, we have worked hard and taken our time to establish a really solid foundation. We want to make sure this comes to fruition so we can serve the community."
Proceeds from the rodeo will benefit the club's opening and operation. It will take place on Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m.
