Willie (Butler) Williams, 85, of Covington, died August 16, 2013. Visitation will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Friday Aug. 23 and the funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 24, both at Greater St. John Baptist Church, 411 Shelton St., Covington. He is survived by his wife, Ester Lee Williams; daughters Dorothy (Bud) Flowers, Estella Farrow, Ruby (Tom) Pirtle and Betty Fayne; sons Willie Williams Jr., Sylvester Williams, Robert Williams and James Williams; a sister and brother; 35 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.


Giles Alton Hamm Jr., 71, of Covington, known lovingly as “Tigger Paw Paw” to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully at 6:36 p.m. on Aug. 16, 2013 with his family by his side. Giles left a long legacy as a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. After many years of dedication to his career in retail and food service, Giles and his wife of 50 years, Eleanor, retired to Covington. He loved to golf, fish and hunt, but his deepest love was to spend time with his family. He will be deeply missed by his faithful companion and “buddy,” Earl. He leaves his son, Charles “Chuck” Hamm, and his wife, Carrie Sue, and their four children, Hunter, Haley, Abigail and Audrey, all of Munford, and his daughter, Elizabeth Stinson, and her husband, Matthew, and their two children, Katharine and Charles, all of Avondale, Penn. Mr. Hamm is also survived by his sister, Paula Worden of Memphis, sister Tanya Baker and husband Dave of Ludington, Mich., brother Tony Hamm and wife Kim, also of Ludington, Mich., and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who all loved Uncle Giles. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Aug. 18 at West Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Millington. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312. Arrangements were entrusted to Munford Funeral Home.

Lula B. Hughlett, 86, of Covington, died on August 16, 2013. Curries Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

John Roy Smith, 94, a former farmer and carpenter, died on Aug. 16, 2013.
Funeral services took place on Aug. 19 at Maley-Yarbrough Funeral Home.
He is survived by his son, Charles (Harolyn) Smith of Olive Branch, Miss., daughter Sandra (Scott) Robinson of Covington, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Sims Smith. The family has requested memorials be sent to Tabernacle United Methodist Church, where he was a member. 

Ray Long, 88, died on Aug. 17, 2013. Funeral services were held on Aug. 20 at Maley-Yarbrough Funeral Home. He was buried at Covington Memorial Gardens.

Betty Jean Cox, 81, of Wildersville, Tenn., passed away on Monday, August 19. Graveside services were held on Tuesday, August 20 at the Randolph Cemetery in Burlison.  Covington Funeral Home had charge of services. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Cooper and Mary Roberts; five sons, William Mashburn, Gregory Mashburn, Jessie R. Cox, Kevin Cox and Spencer Cox; two sisters, Geraldine Murphy and Charlotte Gillihan; two brothers, Bud Caulkins and Jimmy Caulkins; 23 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren. 
She was preceded in death by a sister, Fannie Ruth Hathcock and Bill Caulkins. Friends may sign an online guestbook at www.covingtonfuneralhome.com.
