It's been in the works for a while, but a week from today Munford residents will be able to roll their trash to the curb and take advantage of a city-managed trash service.
Last week 95-gallon rolling trash cans were distributed around the city.
Residents who live north of Munford Avenue will have their trash picked up on Thursdays. For those south of Munford Avenue, Friday will be the pick-up day.
Earlier this year the Munford Board of Mayor and Aldermen began looking for a trash company with which to contract. Republic Services won the contract in September.
“Like any new program, there are going to be some bumps in the road and some questions that weren't anticipated,” Munford Mayor Dwayne Cole said. “But I believe in the long run this will be something that will benefit our citizens.”
The service is only available to those who live within the Munford city limits.
About two months ago notifications were sent to Munford residents giving them the choice to opt out of the service.
Those who chose to take advantage of the service will be billed $18 on their utility bill per month. Those who live inside the city limits and are Poplar Grove customers will see the charge on their Poplar Grove bills.
Additional cans be requested for an extra $10 a month.
For residents who already have residential trash service with Republic Services, Allied Waste or Barker Brothers, no action is needed. That account will automatically be closed.
Those who use a different vendor need to contact them to close that account, although no other vendors will be allowed to pick up residential trash in the city.
Questions about the service should be directed to Munford City Hall at 837-0171, or by e-mail at email@example.com.
