The Chester County Independent received first place for Best Personal Humor Column at Tennessee Press Associationâ€™s 2013 State Press Awards, co-sponsored by the University of Tennessee, on Friday, July 19. The Independent received the award for Mary Mount Dunbarâ€™s 2012 â€śMaryâ€™s Musingsâ€ť column entitled â€śI didnâ€™t know marriage came with cowboy boots and a chainsaw.â€ť
The Independent also placed third in Best Single Features for Marney Gilliamâ€™s story entitled â€śCivil War historian brings life to heroes of old.â€ť
The Independent also received a total of five awards in Group I of the TPA State Press Awards. In addition to first and third place awards, the Independent received fourth place for Best Education Reporting and Best Headline Writing and fifth place for Community Lifestyles.

The Washington State Press Association judged a total of 1,485 entries from 74 of the associationâ€™s 121 member newspapers. UT has co-sponsored the annual contest since 1940.
