Hoops recap: Brighton wins, Covington hosts second-ranked Haywood tonight

The Brighton Cardinals boys basketball team traveled to Mississippi Tuesday night and picked up a 70-67 non-district win over Center Hill. 

Brighton (3-13) was up by one point heading into the fourth quarter and held on for the win. 

Milton Hardy led the Cardinals with 19 points, Tyran Cooper added 16, Lorenzo Hunt scored 11 and Terrel Wayne White added 10. 

On Wednesday the Cardinals dropped a home game to Millington, 65-54. Tyran Cooper had 15, Tremaine Cooper 12 and Kolton Childress scored 11. 

Brighton's girls dropped a 44-36 decision to Center Hill. Shayna Johnson scored 11 and Danielle Collins 10 for Brighton (1-16). 

Brighton hosts Dyer County on Friday in a District 13-AAA game. 

In other area action:

• The Covington boys (10-6 overall, 1-1 District 15-AA) lost at home to district foe Ripley, 66-60, on Tuesday. 

The Chargers led by seven heading into the fourth quarter before the Tigers (15-5, 2-0) rallied for the win. 

Malcolm Taylor led the Chargers with 15 points. Demarcus Seaberry added 12 and Bobby Shanks scored 11. 

Covington's girls jumped out to a 15-1 lead over Ripley in the first quarter and cruised to a 56-13 win. 

The Lady Chargers (11-5, 2-0) were led by Janekia Mason with 12 points and Precious Harvey with 10. LeShaundra Somerville added 11. 

Covington hosts Haywood tonight (Thursday) in a key district game. Haywood's boys are 16-0 and ranked second in the state. 

• The Tipton-Rosemark Academy boys beat Fayette Academy 63-56 in a league game Tuesday night at home. 

Matt Moody led the Rebels (10-9, 3-2) with 18 points and Connor Alexander scored 16. Johnie Sanfratello chipped in 12. 

The Lady Rebels (9-9, 1-4) lost to Fayette Academy 41-27. Taylor Beasley led the Lady Rebels with nine and Bethany Berger scored seven. 

TRA hosts USJ on Friday in league action. 

• Munford was off Tuesday night and will host Hardin County on Friday in league action.
